2026 Office Closures:

On the First and Third Thursday of each month, our office will be closed for staff development from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. The office is also closed for the following Holidays:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

  • Memorial Day

  • Juneteenth

  • Independence Day

  • Labor Day

How long will it take to receive my permit?

Once the permit application with all supporting documents and payment has been submitted, the intake process will begin and take up to five business days. It is then sent to all required reviewing agencies to view concurrently. This process can take up to ten business days. If a resubmittal is required, this timeline will be extended. Commercial permit review process varies upon the complexity of the project. Please contact the office for more information.


I have an open Well or Septic permit, how do I close this out?

Do we accept submittals through email?

Unfortunately, we do not accept submittals through email. Please apply online, through mail, or in office.


I am thinking of purchasing a property, can I build on it?

Please contact the Planning & Zoning Department for more information at 410-535-2348


I'm having trouble with the Encompass Portal, who should I contact?

Please contact Encompass support at encompass@calvertcountymd.gov or by phone (410)535-1600 (Ext 8550). Unless you are a registered license holder with Calvert County. In which case, please call your respective coordinator: Cynthia Bryant (building), Brittany Johnson (plumbing), or Kelly Ostazeski (electric)


Can I pull an Electrical or Plumbing permit as the homeowner?

Only a state licensed Master Electrician and/or Master Plumber registered with Calvert County can pull an Electrical or Plumbing Permit.


Are the electrical and/or plumbing work I plan to do part of my building permit?

No, your building permit is just for the structure itself. You will need to have a state licensed and county registered electrician and/or plumber obtain their own permits once the building permit is issued.


How do I register as a Licensed Contractor, Electrician, or Plumber in Calvert County?

For new registrations, Licensee must appear in person. For renewals, documents can be submitted through mail. To complete the registration, the Licensee will need to submit a completed license application, a copy of their active Maryland State license, certificate of insurance, and a copy of their valid driver’s license. The required fee listed on the application will need to be submitted with all documents.


Can an inspector come to my house/project today?

Unfortunately, due to the number of inspection requests each day, we are not able to accommodate same day inspections. We are however one of the few counties in Maryland to offer next day inspections.


Do I get to pick the time for my inspection?

Due to the number of inspections spread throughout the County on any given day, our inspectors set their own time windows for each inspection the day of. This ensures timely responses to each scheduled inspection. Please contact the office on the day of your inspection for a two hour timeframe.


Can we process payments over the phone?

Unfortunately, we do not accept payments over the phone. Please submit payments online in the Encompass portal or process payment in office.
