Calvert County is the first county in the state of Maryland to launch Open Table, an evidence-based program that aims to build social support networks to help individuals and families in need. This unique volunteer experience will allow you to go beyond giving by investing in others and our community. It allows community members to utilize their social and relational resources to help others achieve better outcomes in life and move towards self-sufficiency. Table members gain an appreciation for the challenges experienced by many people in their community and get to be a part of the solution. The purpose of Calvert County’s Open Table is about the impact on the community as a whole – about the influence we can have on each other through continued support, the kindness we can show, and what we can offer simply by our presence.
Help transforms the community through an ongoing connection between volunteer community members and Calvert County residents who need support. As a volunteer, you will be trained to utilize your social capital to support individuals and families in creating a vision for their ideal life. With direct support from the program coordinator, volunteer table members are paired with a community member, referred to as a friend, and work together to reduce barriers and challenges to achieving their goals. With continued training and engagement, the program empowers table members and friends to establish a relationship that is built on support and growth together and as individuals throughout the process.
