Calvert County Government Citizens Academy

Local government touches the lives of all residents.


From public safety, recreation programs and road maintenance to water service, senior programs, building codes and more,
county government performs a vital role in the well-being of our community.

Now residents can get an in-depth look at how county government works through the Calvert County Government Citizens Academy.
This free program features site visits and discussions with county staff that will give a unique insight into the daily work
that goes into local government.

The nine-week academy includes weekly evening sessions from 6 to 9 p.m.
It is open to county residents 18 years of age and older. Participants will be selected through an application process.

The 2019 Citizens Academy application process is closed.

January 10

County Overview
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Calvert Marine Museum

Survey the County Administrator’s Office and explore the duties of the Deputy County Administrator and the County Attorney. Learn about volunteer opportunities on local advisory boards and commissions.

January 24

Human Resources and Community Resources
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Calvert Pines Senior Center

Learn about recruitment, risk management, employee benefits and training and development. Get an overview of the Office on Aging, Public Transportation, Calvert County Family Network and Calvert Alliance Against Substance Abuse.

January 31

Finance and Budget and General Services
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Northeast Community Center

Learn about accounting practices, the county budget, the Capital Improvement Program and procurement. Review Buildings and Grounds, capital projects and the mosquito control program.

February 7

Communications and Media Relations and Technology Services
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Harriet E Brown Community Center

Review the county's integrated marketing and communications program, explore key areas of the Calvert County Government website and learn about technology supporting local government.

February 13

Planning and Zoning
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Kings Landing Park

Develop an understanding of zoning, permitting and citizen relations, the Board of Appeals, environmental programs, long-range planning, planning/development review and the Division of Inspections and Permits.

February 21

Public Safety
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Calvert County Courthouse

Learn about the False Alarm Reduction Unit, the Control Center (911), Emergency Management, Hazmat Response Team and the county’s volunteer fire-rescue-EMS service.

February 28

Public Works
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Calvert County Highway Maintenance Building

Explore Engineering, Project Management, Water and Sewer, Solid Waste and Recycling, Highway Maintenance and Fleet Maintenance.

March 7

Sheriff's Office and Detention Center
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Detention Center and Sheriff's Office

Learn about Sheriff’s Office operations and tour the Calvert County Detention Center.

March 21

Parks and Recreation and Economic Development
6 to 9 p.m.
Location: Flag Ponds Nature Park

Get an overview of county recreational sites, nature parks, sports programs, aquatics and more through Parks and Recreation. With Economic Development, review county business development, business support services, agriculture and tourism.
